Concord 51 Response to President Obama's Address on Climate Change
C51 has come out with a response to President Obama's address Tuesday afternoon on climate change.
Addressing an issue as daunting as climate change will require our generation to lead. However, the president cannot use his executive authority to unilaterally create new technologies. While we don’t agree with President Obama’s approach, we do agree that there is a need for new energy solutions. We support a longer-term commitment to research and development that will catalyze real breakthrough solutions to this challenge.
Utilities are currently working to comply with several other major environmental regulations previously promulgated by the Obama Administration and we would encourage a more flexible timeline so that the public has access to electricity generation that is both environmentally, but also economically, sustainable.
We may be willing to hear the President out on his ideas for addressing climate change, but we cannot endorse anything that stifles economic growth in the process. We must take a hard look at the costs and benefits of these proposals before they move forward. Instead of the top-down regulatory regime that the President is proposing, a plan that violates the spirit of environmental federalism established in the Clean Air Act, we should look for better approaches that work for our country.
